One Called “Santa Klaws”
Other countries call him Sinterklaas, Father Christmas, Christindl, Pere Noel, Babbo Natale, Grandfather Frost, Kerstman, or Shengdan Laoren. They have their own name for him. But in the Philippines, Pinoy’s call him “Santa Klaws” … hmmm … no offense but it sounds like a derivation from “Santa Claus”. Would it be better if we have a uniquely Filipino name for him? hmmmm ……
If St. Nicholas started it all ….. i mean, the gift-giving in secret …. a Filipino name could be, “Nico”, “Nick”, Nik-nik”, “Nikol”, “Nikolo”, “kulas”, “Ula” …… but nothing really sounds christmasly ….
“San Kulas” would have been it …. but … we have grown, from a believer to an accomplice, to calling him “Santa Klaws” …. who would want to change his name anyway … i believe the tradition of giving gift in secret matters most than a uniquely Filipino name for him. They say the joy and fun of Christmas is for the young ones … hmmm … no….. it’s within all of us …. it’s just a matter of looking into our core and finding that young-me in ourselves … it’s more fun and joyful than thinking of renaming him … so, i rest my case … he was and will always be the same old man with the silky white-beard Santa Klaws.
